Introducing: The BLOGG
I have to be honest with you: I’ve rewritten these first two sentences at least a dozen times now. Apparently, actually starting a blog is the hardest part!*
And since we’re here, I have another confession for you: I kinda hate the word blog. It feels outdated (helloooo early aughts!), self-indulgent (please read all of my thoughts about what I’m doing), and just a little gross (not so vaguely reminiscent of the sound my cat makes when he vomits). But what the hell else do you call this thing? I really don’t know, so for now, it’s a blog and I am going to just go with it. (But if you have ideas for something else to call it, I’m all ears!)
So now that I’ve talked about hating blogs and my cat puking, let’s jump in.
I’m Skye, the artist/maker and sole driving force behind Hello Hue Studio. I have an extensive background in fiber and textiles, as well as creative endeavors writ large. Which is a fancy way of saying that I’ve been designing and creating things for as long as I can remember, and why I always pause and stumble when someone asks me about how long I’ve been doing this, because the real - albeit, annoying - answer is: my entire life. (Cue eyeroll)
There’s a longer version of this story that I’ll share someday, but suffice to say Hello Hue Studio first started (without a name, of course) in the summer of 2018 when I started selling naturally-dyed (in solid colors + resist-dyed patterns) napkins and bags at a local farmers market. I like to say it then started again in the winter of 2019 when I started slicing my lovingly hand-dyed fabrics into 2 inch wide strips and sewing them together, then cutting those stripe blocks into shapes and sewing those back together with undyed fabric to create patchwork-esque wall pieces. These first pieces were fairly complicated and utterly satisfying to make.
And with that, I was hooked on stripes.
Endless sampling, trials and errors (and failures), several business courses, a name change, a few feeble attempts at “launching” and three distinct website re-designs followed, along with two moves, countless meltdowns, and of course one pandemic, and so here we are: at the goddamn beginning (again).
It’s funny how that works, isn’t it?
Well, cheers to a(nother) beginning: welcome to the blogggg (say it like you’re one of the alien toys in the arcade machine in Toy Story).
*ok ok, probably the second hardest part because we’ve all clicked on the “blog” link of an artist/maker/brand website and found the remnants of a sad, abandoned blog, so clearly keeping a blog going is actually the hardest part, but I’d say starting is a very close second.
