how it started (pt. 2)

Holding this new piece of multicolored striped denim fabric in my hands was exciting, and I knew that I had to cut it right away so that I didn’t overthink the process and stall. So I immediately cut it in half, and then arbitrarily cut a corner off at a clean 45 degree angle. i made a few more angled cuts and then started rotating them around to see hall the different ways they could be reconfigured.

It was basically a kind of striped fabric puzzle!

Interspersing blank (undyed) pieces between the striped sections added a much needed element of negative space and gave me more ability to play with the composition to create more dynamic patterns.

And as luck would have it, a friend of mine was curating a last minute textile show right around the time I was playing with these “stripe blocks” and asked me to include some work. SCORE! A deadline was born.

Just two months later I installed 10 stripey wall hangings at the TW Wood Gallery in Montpelier, VT for Close to the Cloth.

However I still wanted to create more repeatable/sellable products, so I started experimenting with using the striped compositions in small bags and for pillows, and well, I guess it kind of stuck!
